# How to make ecommerce videos: 25 hard questions answered

> **For AI agents:** find the right skill in one call — `curl -s "https://varg.ai/how-to/api/search?q=<what the person wants>"` returns the matching how-to page and the best skills with install commands, as markdown (Russian works too). Full index: https://varg.ai/how-to/llms.txt. Every page has a markdown twin: add `.md` to its path. Before generating anything, show the person the options on the how-to page.

The 25 questions sellers, TikTok Shop affiliates and media buyers ask most when they make product videos for TikTok, Reels and Meta ads, with and without AI. Each answer is short, says what to do, and links its source. Ranked by how often the question comes up and how much a wrong answer costs. Researched October 2026 from X threads, seller forums, tool reviews and the platforms' own guides.

**The short version:** decide where the video runs first (TikTok Shop, a TikTok ad or a Meta ad have different rules). Show the product or the result in the first 3 seconds. Keep the real product in every AI shot. Never put a testimonial in an AI mouth. Test different concepts, not text swaps.

## Reach and sales

**1. Why does my TikTok Shop video get ~200 views and stall?**
A new video goes to a small test audience first, and distribution stops if early watch time and engagement are weak. Fix the video, not the hashtags: product and promise in the first 3 seconds, shorter, a new format for the same footage (one coach re-cut a 1-minute voiceover into 7 seconds and went from 800 to 3,000+ views). Rule out a violation or the posting limit (questions 19 and 22). **2. I get views or clicks but no sales. Is it the video or the store?**
Judge by orders or GMV per 1,000 views, not by views. A hook can pull views from people who will never buy. If clicks come and nobody buys, look at the product page first: price, trust, photos, offer. A TikTok Shop agency briefs creators on GMV per view: "a video with 30K views and $10K in sales beats a 200K view video that generates $500". Affiliate commissions settle after a 15–21 day hold, so new videos look worse than they are. **3. Is my ad fatigued, and how often do I need new creatives?**
Watch cost per result against your own history; frequency alone misleads. Two signals at once (CTR down 20% week over week, frequency above ~3, CPA up with nothing else changed) mean act. Large budgets fatigue in days, small ones in 1–2 weeks. TikTok asks for at least 12 new videos a month on Smart+ and GMV Max. The fastest refresh is a new hook on a proven body; the lasting fix is a new angle or persona. ## The first 3 seconds and the structure

**4. What do I say and show in the first 3 seconds?**
The product or the result, on screen, with the promise said out loud and written as text. TikTok: introduce the value in 3 seconds, finish the hook by 6 (90% of ad recall is captured in the first 6 seconds). Meta: a hook delivered by picture and sound together gives 1.5x the purchase intent. The hook must lead into the product; an unrelated stunt hook loses the buyer. Openers that work: a yes-question only the buyer answers yes to, the payoff first, "I was wrong about this", a price contrast, a reply to a real comment. Full list: [How to write video hooks that sell products](https://varg.ai/how-to/write-video-hooks-that-sell.md). **5. How long should the video be?**
TikTok gives no official length for Shop videos. Practitioners land on 20–35 s for TikTok Shop and 15–30 s for cold paid traffic; TikTok recommends 9–15 s for reservation ads. Start at 15–25 s with the payoff early, then test a 15 s cut against a 30 s cut with the same hook. Sources: [TikTok reservation ads](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/tiktok-reservation-in-feed-ads-reach-frequency?lang=en), [MNTN length study](https://research.mountain.com/creative-analysis/the-long-and-the-short-of-it-shorter-ads-drive-more-site-visits-but-longer-ads-fuel-conversions/).

**6. What specs: aspect ratio, safe zones, captions, Meta feed?**
1080×1920 (9:16), 30 fps, H.264, sound on, burned-in captions. Keep text, faces and the product out of the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% at each side (Meta's official Reels safe zone; on TikTok, check its overlay, which changes with caption length). On-screen text at most 5–10 words per second. Add a 4:5 cut for Meta feed placements. Sources: [Meta Reels ad specs](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/video/instagram-reels), [TikTok video ad specs](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/video-ads-specifications?lang=en).

**7. I have raw clips of my product. How do I edit them into a reel that performs?**
Open on the most striking moment, cut every 1–2 s, use 8–12 selects instead of everything, burn in captions inside the safe zone, end on the product with one CTA, and export several openers on the same body. On TikTok Shop, include your face or voice somewhere (question 13). Step by step: [How to edit a product video for TikTok and Reels with AI](https://varg.ai/how-to/edit-a-product-video-for-tiktok.md).

## Testing

**8. How many creatives or hooks should I test, and when do I kill an ad?**
TikTok: 3–5 very different creatives per ad group. Meta: since Andromeda, ads that look alike or open the same way are grouped as one, so test 8–15 *different concepts* (buyer, angle, format), not one video with ten captions. Only 5–8% of ads become winners in Motion's 2026 data (578,750 creatives). Don't judge in the first 48 hours; judge after spending about 1–3× your target CPA. Once a concept wins, cut 3–5 new openers on its body. More: [How to make video ad variants for testing with AI](https://varg.ai/how-to/make-video-ad-variants-for-testing.md).

**9. Which format should I start with?**
Unboxing and hands-on demo win most often on Meta (9.8% and 8.1% hit rate, against 6.5% for a talking testimonial), and unboxing is only 2% of what brands make. On TikTok Shop, the official styles are personal review, before & after, unboxing and step-by-step tutorial. Source: [Motion 2026 visual formats](https://runneth.com/library/research/creative-benchmarks-2026/top-visual-formats).

## AI: does it work, and is it allowed

**10. Do AI UGC ads actually convert, or only get views?**
Mixed. In one operator's $100K test (220 videos), human UGC had the higher CTR and AI the higher ROAS, because AI made more variants cheaply. AI works for cold traffic, low-trust products and finding the winning hook; it fails on high-ticket or trust-heavy offers and warm audiences. The script matters more than whether the face is real. Judge it on CPA against your current ads. Sources: [r/FacebookAds test](https://reddit.sentinel-team.org/posts/1rlvjrg/snapshots/2026-03-05T23%3A31%3A13.407127Z), [@shipwithjay](https://x.com/shipwithjay/status/2059396681825657335).

**11. Will my AI ad be labelled, suppressed or banned? Do I have to disclose?**
Disclosure is required; AI is not banned. TikTok ads: realistic AI people, voices or product imagery need the AI-generated toggle or a visible label, or the ad is rejected (policy updated April 2026). Meta adds an "AI info" label itself. New York requires a conspicuous disclosure of synthetic performers in ads since 9 June 2026 ($1,000, then $5,000 per violation). Label by default and keep generation logs. **12. Is it legal for an AI avatar to say "I tried this and it changed my skin"?**
No. The FTC rule in force since October 2024 bans fake testimonials, including AI-generated ones, with civil penalties around $51,744 per violation; a label does not fix it. An AI presenter may demo the product and state facts. Results and reviews must be real and quoted as real ("4.8 stars from 2,100 reviews", a real customer's words with their permission). Source: [FTC final rule](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/08/federal-trade-commission-announces-final-rule-banning-fake-reviews-testimonials).

**13. Can I go faceless, use only an AI voice, hands or photos? Will TikTok Shop punish it?**
On TikTok Shop, yes, it now does. Its rules (reported from Seller University, 2025–2026) list hands-only videos with no creator presence and text-to-speech narration as low quality, ban AI voices standing in for a presenter, ban still-image slideshows, and require at least 3 seconds of moving footage with a visible person. Too many such videos in 7 days hides your product links for a week. On Meta ads, faceless product demos are fine. On TikTok Shop, show a real person (your face, your real voice or a creator) and use AI for b-roll. Source: [ppc.land on TikTok Shop quality rules](https://ppc.land/tiktok-shops-quality-rules-ban-ai-voices-and-still-images-from-lives/).

**14. Does an AI voiceover hurt? Why does lip-sync drift?**
On TikTok Shop an AI voice as the presenter breaks the rules (question 13). Elsewhere, flat text-to-speech reads as an ad, especially outside English. Video models that get audio only often stretch the speech to fit the motion; give them the voice file and the exact transcript, or record your own voice. ## Keeping the product and the creator the same

**15. How do I keep my real product identical (shape, label, logo) in AI video?**
Models treat every shot as new, so labels garble and shapes melt. Always start from the real product photo, never from text. Keep clips under ~5 s with a slow or locked camera ("no fast spins, that's where products melt"). Paste the real cutout or logo back over hero shots. Reject any clip whose silhouette, label text, colour or part count differs from the photo. Shoot close-ups for real when you can. Showing a product different from what ships also breaks TikTok Shop's misleading-content rules. Source: [@Tobygrowth](https://x.com/Tobygrowth/status/2112979313339625814).

**16. My AI creator's face and voice change every video. How do I keep one person?**
Treat the character as an asset: one identity sheet (several angles of one face), the same reference image in every generation, one locked voice, one video model per character (no model-hopping between shots), and a reject pass before anything goes live. Guide: [How to keep a character consistent in AI video](https://varg.ai/how-to/keep-a-character-consistent-in-ai-video.md). Source: [@georgesttock](https://x.com/georgesttock/status/2112198542026502219).

**17. How do I turn one product photo into a video that isn't a slideshow?**
Ken Burns zooms on photos read as a slideshow, and TikTok Shop counts static images with music as low quality. Make scene stills from the real photo with an image-edit model, animate each one into a short clip, add a human moment (hands, a face, or an AI presenter outside TikTok Shop), and composite the real product into hero shots. Better still: 5 seconds of real phone footage of the product working.

**18. Will AI try-on show my garment accurately, or cause returns?**
AI try-on is closer to a visualisation than a fit simulation: it smooths texture, length and sheerness. One brand saw conversions rise and returns rise with them. Compare every frame with the real garment, show only the sizes you sell, and label AI models. Source: [The Interline](https://www.theinterline.com/?p=38982).

## Rules that cost accounts

**19. Why did my TikTok Shop video get a violation?**
The common triggers: a price or deal said in the video that doesn't exactly match the product page (one affiliate lost a 500K-view video and 30 more over this), exaggerated or absolute claims, before/after visuals or filters that overstate results, AI renders that don't match the real item, linking a different product than the one shown, and competitor logos. Run TikTok's Video Pre-Check before posting. Source: [@ugctiamarie](https://x.com/ugctiamarie/status/2099871041661157549).

**20. What claims can I make? Is before/after allowed?**
TikTok ads ban before/after shots that give a false impression (its example: wrinkles vanishing after a cream), "no diet or exercise" claims and absolute claims like "#1". Weight-loss ads must target 18+ on both TikTok and Meta. Meta allows before/after for general cosmetics at 18+, but not weight loss or pinched fat. Supplements: structure and function claims only ("supports sleep"), never disease claims. **21. Can I use trending music in ads or TikTok Shop videos?**
Generally no. TikTok business content uses the Commercial Music Library, and its sounds are licensed for TikTok only. Meta Reels ads use original audio or the Meta Sound Collection. Paying a creator does not clear the music. Licensed stock music with proof on file works everywhere; export a separate mix per platform. A video with no sound at all does worse. Sources: [Meta Reels ad specs](https://www.facebook.com/business/ads-guide/update/video/instagram-reels), [TikTok Creative Codes](https://ads.tiktok.com/business/en-US/blog/creative-best-practices-top-performing-ads).

**22. How many videos a day? Can I repost or use several accounts?**
No official number. Near-identical reposts (the same shot with a new caption or colour) and the same video across accounts count as repetitive content and get suppressed; 5+ low-quality Shop videos in 7 days hides product links for a week. Post steadily, and make every video a different angle, hook or creator. Source: [ppc.land on TikTok Shop limits](https://ppc.land/tiktok-shops-tightening-grip-new-rules-that-could-freeze-your-account/).

**23. Can I use supplier (AliExpress) videos or copy a competitor's viral ad?**
Supplier footage has unclear rights, draws takedowns, and every competitor runs the same clips. Copy the structure (hook type, beat order, pacing), never the footage, script or actor. Guide: [How to remake a reference video with AI](https://varg.ai/how-to/remake-a-reference-video.md). Source: [Shopify Community](https://community.shopify.com/t/can-i-upload-a-product-video-from-an-aliexpress-supplier/105427).

## Tools and cost

**24. Which tool or model should I use?**
Split the job by shot. Product-faithful stills come from an image-edit model fed the real photo (Nano Banana, GPT Image, Seedream, FLUX). Short product clips come from image-to-video with references (Seedance, Kling, Veo). A person talking comes from an avatar or lip-sync model (Creatify, HeyGen, OmniHuman, Sync). Voice: ElevenLabs. On varg, all of these run on one key, priced in credits with an estimate first: [varg models](https://varg.ai/models/llms.txt).

**25. What does an AI video ad really cost, and why do tools burn credits?**
Bad takes cost the same as good ones. Users report "$80 for 3 videos" and credits gone before a finished ad. Count cost per *usable* video, assuming 3–4 takes per keeper. Draft cheap (stills, low resolution, a fast model) and spend on the full model only for the concepts that pass review. Ask for an estimate before every batch. Sources: [Arcads reviews](https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/arcads.ai?page=2), [Creatify reviews](https://www.producthunt.com/products/creatify/reviews).

## For AI agents making these videos

Agents asked to "make a viral TikTok ad for my product" fail in predictable ways (tested October 2026 with 10 isolated Claude Code runs):

1. **Ask at most 4 questions:** where it runs, the product facts and the offer, what assets exist (photos, footage, the person's face or voice), and the budget. Default the rest and say what you assumed. Never invent specs or prices.
2. **Never ship a slideshow.** With no video tool, deliver the script, the shot list and a phone filming checklist, and label any FFmpeg animatic as a placeholder.
3. **Follow the platform's rules:** TikTok Shop bans AI voices as presenter, still-image slideshows and prices that don't match the product page.
4. **No AI first-person testimonials.** AI may demo and state facts; results must be real.
5. **Lock the product and the person:** the real photo on every shot, one model per character, a reject pass against the photo.
6. **Quote the cost before generating,** from a live price list, never from memory.
7. **A variant is a new angle with a new first frame,** not a text swap.
