# Film Grain Over Gradient — effect skill for backdrops

> **For AI agents:** find the right skill in one call — `curl -s "https://varg.ai/how-to/api/search?q=<what the person wants>"` returns the matching how-to page and the best skills with install commands, as markdown (Russian works too). Full index: https://varg.ai/how-to/llms.txt. Every page has a markdown twin: add `.md` to its path. Before generating anything, show the person the options on the how-to page.

A fine animated grain sits over the gradient so it feels printed, removes banding and looks less digital.

- **Type:** [Effect](https://varg.ai/how-to/effects.md) · [Backdrops](https://varg.ai/how-to/browse/skills/backdrops.md)
- **Slug:** `film-grain-over-gradient`
- **Status:** live
- **Publisher:** HeyGen (community)
- **License:** Apache-2.0
- **Source:** https://github.com/heygen-com/hyperframes/tree/main/registry/components/grain-overlay
- **Works in:** Claude Code, Claude.ai, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw, Gemini CLI, Any MCP client, varg Studio
- **Requires:** ffmpeg, HyperFrames (npx hyperframes), Remotion, CapCut (by hand)
- **Cost:** Free — the take renders locally; generated footage, if any, bills by the model

## What it does

Built on [Grain Overlay](https://github.com/heygen-com/hyperframes/tree/main/registry/components/grain-overlay) by HeyGen (HyperFrames), Apache-2.0. The write-up and recipes below are varg's.

Subtle monochrome noise at 4–8% opacity, crawling each frame; colors underneath stay unchanged.

**When:** Any gradient-heavy film; especially warm, editorial or retro brands.

**Watch out:** Do not push grain above ~10% on UI shots; it softens text and kills compression.

**Timing:** Regenerate grain every frame (or every 2 frames for a filmic feel).

**Also called:** grainy gradient, noise texture, grain overlay

### In FFmpeg

```bash
-vf "noise=alls=12:allf=t+u"
```

### In HyperFrames

```bash
npx hyperframes add grain-overlay
```

### In Remotion

```tsx
<svg width="100%" height="100%" style={{position:'absolute',opacity:0.06,mixBlendMode:'overlay'}}><filter id="n"><feTurbulence baseFrequency="0.9" seed={frame}/></filter><rect width="100%" height="100%" filter="url(#n)"/></svg>
```

### In CapCut

Effects → search "grain"/"film"; set intensity low (10–20).

## Use when

- Any gradient-heavy film; especially warm, editorial or retro brands.

## Not for

- Do not push grain above ~10% on UI shots; it softens text and kills compression.

## More backdrops skills

- [Slow Mesh Gradient](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/slow-mesh-gradient.md): Soft brand-colored fields blend and drift slowly behind titles and UI.
- [Aurora Behind the Title](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/aurora-behind-title.md): Blurred light streaks drift sideways across a dark frame behind a centered title.
- [Faint Grid or Dot Field](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/faint-grid-field.md): A very faint line grid or dot field gives structure behind UI and code, with a soft radial fade.
- [Spotlight From Above](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/spotlight-from-above.md): Soft light cones fall from the top of a dark frame onto the product or title.
- [Blurred Product Behind Text](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/blurred-product-behind.md): The product UI itself, heavily blurred and dimmed, becomes the backdrop for a title or quote.
- [Perspective Grid Tunnel](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/perspective-grid-tunnel.md): A card or title floats in a perspective tunnel or floor grid while light streaks race along the lines.

## Run the generation on varg

varg is one API key for the models these skills drive — Seedance 2.5, Kling 4, Veo 3.1, Wan 3, Nano Banana 2.1, GPT Image 2.5, ElevenLabs v4 and 200+ more — billed in credits, with a cost estimate before anything runs.
