# Jump Cut — effect skill for cuts & pacing

> **For AI agents:** find the right skill in one call — `curl -s "https://varg.ai/how-to/api/search?q=<what the person wants>"` returns the matching how-to page and the best skills with install commands, as markdown (Russian works too). Full index: https://varg.ai/how-to/llms.txt. Every page has a markdown twin: add `.md` to its path. Before generating anything, show the person the options on the how-to page.

Cut out a stretch inside one continuous shot, so the subject visibly jumps. Removes pauses, adds pace.

- **Type:** [Effect](https://varg.ai/how-to/effects.md) · [Cuts & pacing](https://varg.ai/how-to/browse/skills/cuts.md)
- **Slug:** `jump-cut`
- **Status:** live
- **Publisher:** varg (varg, verified)
- **License:** MIT
- **Source:** https://github.com/vargHQ/skills/blob/main/varg-video-edit-library/references/cuts.md#jump-cut
- **Works in:** Claude Code, Claude.ai, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw, Gemini CLI, Any MCP client, varg Studio
- **Requires:** ffmpeg, HyperFrames (npx hyperframes), Remotion, CapCut (by hand)
- **Cost:** Free — the take renders locally; generated footage, if any, bills by the model

## What it does

Same camera, same framing; the subject pops to a new position or expression and time skips forward.

**When:** Talking heads, vlogs, tutorials and shorts where dead air or filler words must go and speed matters more than polish.

**Watch out:** Tiny jumps (a few pixels of head movement) look like glitches; either jump far enough or hide the cut with a punch-in or B-roll.

**Timing:** Cut on the gap: leave 2–4 frames of silence before the next word

**Also called:** jumpcut, talking-head trim, pause removal

### In FFmpeg

Keep segments [0–3.2 s] and [4.1–8 s] of one take (times from silencedetect or a transcript):
```bash
ffmpeg -i take.mp4 -af silencedetect=noise=-35dB:d=0.4 -f null - 2>&1 | grep silence_
ffmpeg -i take.mp4 -filter_complex \
"[0:v]split[s1][s2];[0:a]asplit[t1][t2];\
 [s1]trim=0:3.2,setpts=PTS-STARTPTS[v1];[t1]atrim=0:3.2,asetpts=PTS-STARTPTS[a1];\
 [s2]trim=4.1:8,setpts=PTS-STARTPTS[v2];[t2]atrim=4.1:8,asetpts=PTS-STARTPTS[a2];\
 [v1][a1][v2][a2]concat=n=2:v=1:a=1[v][a]" -map "[v]" -map "[a]" out.mp4
```

### In HyperFrames

Same source, two clips, independent `data-media-start`:
```html
<video id="p1" src="take.mp4" data-start="0" data-duration="3.2" data-media-start="0" data-track-index="0" data-has-audio="true"></video>
<video id="p2" src="take.mp4" data-start="p1" data-duration="3.9" data-media-start="4.1" data-track-index="0" data-has-audio="true"></video>
```

### In Remotion

Two `<Series.Sequence>` of the same file with different `trimBefore` values (in frames).
```tsx
<Series>
  <Series.Sequence durationInFrames={96}><Video src={take} /></Series.Sequence>
  <Series.Sequence durationInFrames={117}><Video src={take} trimBefore={123} /></Series.Sequence>
</Series>
```

### In CapCut

Split around each pause and delete it; on desktop the transcript-based editing tools can mark pauses and filler words for removal (names vary by version).

### Where this comes from

- [Wikipedia: jump cut](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_cut)
- [FFmpeg filters: trim](https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html#trim)
- [HyperFrames: HTML schema](https://hyperframes.heygen.com/reference/html-schema)

## Use when

- Talking heads, vlogs, tutorials and shorts where dead air or filler words must go and speed matters more than polish.

## Not for

- Tiny jumps (a few pixels of head movement) look like glitches; either jump far enough or hide the cut with a punch-in or B-roll.

## Install

- Claude Code: `claude plugin marketplace add vargHQ/skills && claude plugin install varg@varg`
- Codex: `npx skills add vargHQ/skills --skill varg-video-edit-library -a codex -y`

## More cuts & pacing skills

- [SmartCut (capcut-ai-editor)](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/capcut-smartcut-mcp.md): MCP that reads CapCut auto-captions to cut silences and duplicate takes right inside your CapCut project.
- [Auto-Editor](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/auto-editor.md): CLI that cuts dead space by loudness or motion and exports MP4 or editor timelines; now also an agent skill.
- [AutoCut](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/autocut.md): Edit video in a text editor: Whisper transcribes, you delete lines in Markdown, AutoCut cuts the video.
- [Cut Video](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/cut-video.md): Claude Code skill that tightens long recordings with forced-aligned cuts, keeping laughs and comedic pauses.
- [Videogrep](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/videogrep.md): Search spoken words across videos and auto-build supercuts of every match.
- [PySceneDetect](https://varg.ai/how-to/skills/pyscenedetect.md): Find cuts, fades and scene changes in a video, then split it or export scene lists for the edit.
